People say that if they received the diagnosis of cancer they wouldn’t go down without a fight. This begs the question that if you’ll fight to survive, why not fight to thrive?
Why do we give up on our true dreams so easily and fall softly into the status quo? When does the fight to live life like we mean it begin? Should we wait until given a death sentence to feel the desire to really live?
Dream it to Live it
If you were lucky the adults in your life told you to dream big as a child. They encouraged your imagination and your ability to see how a piece of...
So, after getting a little naked in my last post, I spent some time thinking about how I wanted to get dressed.
I thought about how I wanted to show up in this world in a way that is both vulnerable and authentic.
But first I needed to get clear on why I was covering up and hiding from the world in the first place.
Learning to Hide
I grew up with mixed messages about what to share with the world and what to hide. While I was encouraged to be me I was also cautioned as to how, and when, and where to be me.
I spoke my truth in first grade....
If years could have feelings, for me 2013 would feel like grasping; grasping to understand myself, my yearnings versus my reality, my hang-ups, my overused, but what the hell, triggers.
It was heavy. I went one way into anxiety and the other way into a deep despair seeking for balance and equilibrium within a storm of chaos.
Coming up for air I would realize nothing was inherently “wrong” – I wasn’t wrong. Life wasn’t wrong. Certainly, my partner, friends, family, people I barely knew weren’t wrong.
I had created a solid block of confusion in my mind. I...
This is a quick and easy green bean salad that features some crunchy fun toppings and a decadent creamy coconut sauce. I’ve enjoyed making different renditions of it through the holidays including swapping the green beans for asparagus.
Pomegranates are super rich in antioxidants, which protects cells from oxidation, and keeps us from disease and illness. Here’s a little trick to remove the pomegranate seeds; hit the pomegranate with the back of a spoon and the seeds will fly out (caution, it’s a little messy).
Above is one variation to the Festive Green...
When you join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm share there is some inherent risk.
You are at the mercy of the weather, the soil and seed quality, the bugs and other predators, not to mention the knowledge of your farmers and their farmhands.
So, when you receive the bounty of beautiful heirloom (GMO and pesticide free) veggies that we did these past 20 weeks you thank your lucky stars for Jim and Michelle Garman (plus their two young farmhands) of Garman Organic Farm.
Among the culinary delights that we enjoyed this season were New England Pie...
Smooth and tasty, this creamy delicious soup is both hardy and sweet. Made with fennel, carrots, and leek plus warming spices and satisfying coconut milk it is half soup/half dessert by the time you top it with a drizzle of agave nectar and a few toasted pecans.
As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, the temperature drops and the wind picks up it’s natural to start craving more warming, comforting foods to nourish ourselves. Especially for those with a Vata Constitution, it is important to honor that craving and prefer foods that add heat and are naturally...
Crunch. Crunch. Munch. Munch. There was an interesting segment a while back on NPR (National Public Radio) about why humans crave crunchy foods. The theory dates back to millions of years ago when primates ate crunchy insects. If they were crunchy it meant they were fresh. In more recent years humans started to eat plant and vegetable foods that were also crunchy and again, crunchy meant fresh.
Nowadays, crunchy stills means fresh unless, of course, it’s Cookie Crunch cereal or most of the highly processed snack foods available to us. But we’re wising up to that and...
